Dread the sound of your alarm clock going off each morning? This is your sign to ditch your phone alarm in favour of a more natural start to the day. Wake-up light alarm clocks simulate gradual sunsets and sunrises to trick your body into feeling sleepy at night and more awake in the morning.
These clocks provide a form of light therapy which can help treat seasonal depression, a condition that roughly 6 percent of the British population suffer from. During winter especially, the light can help make up for the shortage of daylight and boost your mood.
Lumie invented the original wake-up light clock back in 1992 and have since gone from strength-to-strength, with their best-selling clocks even trusted by the British Swimming team. So, we’re excited to catch up with Jonathan Cridland, CEO of Lumie, to hear more about how they're making life that little bit brighter.
The Lumie Bodyclock Luxe 750DAB offers the complete light and sound experience for better sleep and brighter waking.
The idea came from the early clinical studies into dawn simulation, where a big clinical-looking ceiling lamp was used for research on how light can improve both sleep and waking. This is when Lumie founder (then known as Outside In), Steve Hayes figured that waking with light could be better achieved within a user-friendly bedside lamp. And just like that the first wake-up light was born! Since then, we have continued this evolution up until the present day, with our most premium wake-up light, Bodyclock Luxe 750DAB.
Attitudes towards sleep and wellbeing are constantly changing, and it now seems more important than ever to prioritise our wellbeing. With the outbreak of the global pandemic, the way we live and work changed forever, and the role of light in regulating our sleep/wake patterns has become more apparent than before.
Bodyclock Luxe 750DAB is our most premium sleep/wake-up light that offers a high-quality light and audio experience. The alarm works by mimicking the light and colour of a sunrise and sunset to help you drift off to sleep and gently awaken without the need for a harsh beeping alarm. It has an adjustable fading sunrise and sunset duration, with a choice of light intensity and a selection of more than 20 sleep/wake sounds. It also operates as a fully dimmable bedside light and nightlight, with a non-alerting low-blue light option especially for bedtime.
As well as its calming sunset and gradual brightening sunrise, Bodyclock Luxe 750DAB also offers an enhanced audio experience with DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port for music playback. We also improved the user-experience by introducing tap-control snooze and an auto-dimming display.
Our sleep/wake-up lights help regulate your circadian rhythms to help you sleep better each night. In the morning, Bodyclock mimics a sunrise to wake you up naturally, stimulating the production of hormones that help us get up and go, like cortisol. Waking up this way has been shown to improve mood, energy levels, productivity, the quality of sleep and awakening. They are a much nicer way to wake, with benefits you don’t get from a traditional alarm clock!
What is more, Bodyclock wake-up lights have been designed to minimise alerting blue light at night-time as the gradual sunset promotes a natural sleep response and cues our bodies to increase the production of sleep hormones, such as melatonin.
I can be both, so I use my Lumie Bodyclock light to help set a sleep routine. I love waking with a sunrise and the birds chirruping, it feels like spring even in winter. We took great care to get the light just right, and even the sounds are authentic, some being special recordings just for us.
I’m looking forward to Situ Live visitors being able to see our Bodyclock Luxe 750DAB in ‘situ’ to experience its fading sunset and gradual sunrise and discover how the wake-up light could help them improve their sleep/wake cycles. I’m also looking forward to discovering new brands in the Sleep and Wellbeing theatre that we may not have heard of before.
