Situ Live recently ran a competition to find the next generation of high street entrepreneurs. The winner? PERRY eHopper.

We sit down with founder, Andy Perry, to get a closer look behind the brand, as we talk inspiration, cycling trends, and winning a residency at Situ Live.

What are some of the standout features of the PERRY eHopper?

At only 14kg, the PERRY eHopper is the UK’s lightest electric folding e-bike. It is also very compact when folded (in just 5 moves), meaning it easily fits into the back of a car or on a train luggage rack. While a hidden battery in the seatpost, and a choice of five power modes with front and rear mudguards, ensures this bike looks and behaves in a smart way.

What led you to create the PERRY brand?

As keen cyclists, we understand many of the challenges faced when choosing to cycle, from commuting to cleaning.

It was when we were out cycling one day, witnessing littered streets, congestion, and poor quality transport solutions, that we realised the need for a sustainable transport solution. We wanted to put our experience with motion technology to use.

We saw the need for an e-bike that could be used for commuting or easily packed in your car boot, enabling you to get to your destination with minimal effort. And so, the PERRY eHopper was born.

Now we have gone on to create a range of other responsible transport solutions and accessories which complement the PERRY eHopper.

It seems more people than ever are taking up cycling in the UK, do you think this trend is here to stay?

The cycling market has grown significantly over the last 20 years, with a massive uplift in 2012 when Bradley Wiggins won the Tour De France and the time trial at the London Olympics.

In fact, in 2012 Team GB won more cycling track medals than any other nation and the following year Chris Froome won the Tour De France. During these two years the UK experienced a 20 percent growth in cycling and this upward trend continues!

The introduction of e-bikes helped maintain growth in the market and now e-bike sales outnumber those of traditional bicycles with the trend showing no signs of slowing.

Cycling offers much more than simply exercise. It provides a chance to escape and experiences new places. This was evident during the recent lockdown, when a rush on bikes led to a severe shortage of cycle stock.

And this trend in cycling shows no sign of abating soon. The bicycle is the answer to so many of our modern-day problems including obesity, environment, and traffic congestion. Notwithstanding this, cycling can help alleviate stress and anxiety, and provides a sustainable, inexpensive mode of travel.

The UK e-bike market is expected to triple in size over the next five years. Why do you think they have become so popular?

When first introduced to the market, e-bikes were extremely heavy, had a short battery life and were very expensive. Today, innovative use of existing components like the seatpost that hides the PERRY eHopper battery and more efficient lightweight drive systems has helped reduce weight, bulk, and price. These types of innovations have led to an explosion in sales, which has further reduced the cost of producing and purchasing an e-bike.

In 2020, almost 25 percent of bicycle sales were for e-bikes and this trend is likely to climb over the next five years. Personally, we have seen a sales increase of almost 40 percent from the previous year and we expect this trend to continue into 2022.

Sales of second-hand PERRY eHoppers are up as well. As customers upgrade their bikes, we service their existing bikes, ensuring they are safe to be sold on. This extends the life of an e-bike purchase, which supports our long-term sustainability strategy.

Congratulations again on winning the one-year product residency through the Situ Live Spotlight Competition. Just how important is it for people to be able to see your e-bike in real life?

Most of our sales come direct through our website or through one of our major online retailers, which makes it difficult for consumers to fully experience the joy of cycling a PERRY eHopper ahead of their purchase.

When potential customers get to touch and ride a PERRY eHopper they get it straight away. We witness the joy on their faces as they realise just how valuable a purchase it is and what it means to them to be able to get out and ride.

It is really important to us that the consumer makes the right purchase first time, and we appreciate some consumers may not want to make this investment without first trying the bike in store. That’s why we’re so excited to have our product bought to life in Situ Live. Seeing the bike in real life will mean more and more people will choosing a greener transport solution and will position our PERRY eHopper as a pioneer for sustainable innovation.
